Online Archiving of Log Messages
Benefit
Online Archiving removes the need to purge Log Messages frequently. The Online Archiving feature affords retention of Log Messages for longer number of days.
Example: Instead of purging Log Messages after 7 days, enabling Online Archiving of Log Messages can augment the number of days the messages are retained and are available to the users.
To test the benefit described in the example:

In System Configuration, Logging tab, set Log Message Retention (in days) as 14.

In System Configuration, Logging tab, enable Archive Log Message and set Older than as Message logs created in the last 14 days will be available to users.
General Best Practices
Consider these best practices while using Online Archiving:

In System Configuration, Master tab, enable Automatic Daily History Cleanup.
Note: Once Log Messages start getting purged according to the Log Message Retention (in days) setting, enable Online Archiving.

In System Configuration, Master tab, set History Purge Offset and Archive Offset such that purge or archiving or they start at a time of the day when the Master runs fewer number of jobs.
